Silvretta Ski Tour Overview

The Silvretta ski tour in the heart of the Western Austrian Alps is a fantastic first Alps hut to hut tour that offers stunning scenery and a relaxed itinerary. With relaxed touring options between the huts and layover days at two of the huts, this is a great tour for both seasoned backcountry skiers and those new to Alps hut to hut ski touring.

Located in the Silvrettra region of the Austrian Alps, which sees some of the heaviest snow packs in the Alps. The region tends to hold powder longer after a storm than many other regions of the Alps. The Silvretta region is an historical alpine climbing and ski mountaineering region home to the famous Piz Buin, one of Austria’s most notable peaks.

We begin and end in the small town of Galtur where we stay in 4-star hotel accommodations with spa. The Silvretta tour is skied in a large semi-loop out of the nearby ski resort of Ischgl over high mountain passes and across glaciers while visiting three huts in 6 days of ski touring. This allows for two layover days which gives us the option to choose the best ski objectives and aspects on those days. Many different ski mountaineering and touring objectives are available including non-technical peak ascents and spectacular glaciated tours.

The huts in Austria are a sight to see! We stay at the Heidelberger hut just inside Switzerland, the large Jamtal hut and the cozy Weisenbadener Hut both is Austria. All known for be among the most comfortable in Europe, they offer hot showers, fantastic meals and fine Austrian hospitality.

Our Silvretta ski tour represents a higher value with all meals included and 4-star hotel accommodations with luxurious spa before and after the tour.

The Silvretta ski tour is a great alternative to the more famous Haute Route if you are looking for a less-crowded tour with a bit more relaxed itinerary that focuses more on the downhill skiing. And unlike the Haute route, we summit peaks on many of the days with great descents.

IAG IFMGA guides Paul Koubek and Dave Miller lead the Silvretta ski tours. Join us in March for this special Alps ski tour!

SILVRETTA SKI TOUR ITINERARY

Silvretta Ski Tour Day 1
Travel day to the small resort hamlet of Galtur, Austria. We meet at our hotel for dinner. While travel costs to Galtur are not included, we will assist you with travel logistics. It is a fairly straightforward travel day of trains and busses from major airports.

Silvretta Ski Tour Day 2
From Galtur, we take a short skiers shuttle down the the bustling resort of Ischgl and ride the lifts to the top of Piz Val Gronda and then ski off-piste down to the Heidelberger Hut just slightly over the border in Switzerland. After lunch we have the opportunity to ski some of the fantastic nearby ski lines.

Silvretta Ski Tour Day 3
Today we tour up from the Heidelberger Hut to the Kronenjoch. Here we have the option of climbing the non-technical Breite-Krone which offer spectacular views of the Alps in all directions. Then we have a long ski down to the Jamtal Hut.

Silvretta Ski Tour Day 4
Today is a layover day at the Jamtal Hut with some great options for tours and easy peak ascents such as the Jamsptiz or the Gemspitz. Both offer long North facing descents back down the glaciers to the hut.

Silvretta Ski Tour Day 5
Leaving the Jamtal Hut, we tour up to the Obere Ochenscharte pass with an option of an ascent of the Dreilanderspitz and then a descent down to the cozy Weisenbadener Hut. The Weisenbadener offers fantastic food, especially their Kaiserschmarm, a local Austrian french toast-like delicacy. The hut also offers spectacular views of Piz Buin.

Silvretta Ski Tour Day 6
Another layover day, we have the option to go on a wonderful tour up the glaciers towards Piz Buin or explore the runs closer to the hut. One of the more scenic days of the tour!

Ortler Ski Tour Day 7
Leaving the Weisenbadener hut, we tour up towards the Rauher Kopf and then enjoy a very long descent back to near Galtur down the Bieltal. There are some opportunities for extra vertical along the way as well. Arriving back in Galtur, we enjoy a celebratory dinner!
